 SDSU fires mascot Zuma

San Diego State has fired its cuddly costume mascot Zuma after nearly two years of controversy about how the character fit into the school’s Aztec brand.

The character — a jaguar — was designed to entertain children at SDSU football and basketball games. But some fans detested Zuma, calling it an embarrassment to the school and SDSU's “real” mascot — the Aztecs.

Zuma was not the mascot.

It had to happen and I am glad a played I key roll in "its" removal.

As a business you create a "brand". Then you promote the hell out of that brand. There should be no confusion about that brand to the public. That is why you create a brand.

While I can't fault some who thought the idea might bring in more kids, it was a clear dilution of our brand.

How this even happened at an Athletic Dept. that has D1 sports was incredible in itself. The only way something like this could have happened at a major university is for someone in a key position in the Athletic Dept. to be allowed to run wild without being watched/controlled. Just incredible.

This "Zuma" was voted down multiple times by the Mascot Commitee (of which I am part of), which was put in control of PROTECTING the traditions of San Diego State Athletics by the Alumni Association.

Yet after being turned down multiple times over a 10 year period, "it" was somehow pushed thru and became a reality.

After it became a reality (based on it was going to be in a kids area, catering to little kids only), it appeared on the field, led the football out of tunnel, led the Warrior Walk, welcomed players in basketball being announced before the game with high fans, danced with Cheerleaders, and spent most of its time in the College Student Sections (NOT with kids).

And some wonder why people in the Mascot Commitee (who are were placed on that board to protect traditions of San Diego University) wanted Zuma removed?

Are you kidding me?

***To prove my point below we will use your title as an example. Zuma confused the "brand" of San Diego State Athetics. The "brand" is the Aztec Warrior...If their was no confusion of that "brand", you would not have posted in your thread title...-Aztecs Fire Mascot-***

Correct.

Zuma was not a mascot and enterted the picture at San Diego State as a "supplemental character". It was intented to be with something called the Aztec Club which catered to kids, played in a kids area, and keep kids entertained.

It was never intended to be on the basketball floor, in the student section, leading the team out of the tunnel at football, leading the Warrior Walk before the games from the parking lot into the Stadium.

The inventor of Zuma has wanted Zuma to be the Aztec Mascot for 10 years (that is when our Mascot Commitee first voted down Zuma, 10 years ago. He was voted down at least once more over the last 10 years). The inventor is an Aztec Athletic Dept. employee.

Of course here we are 10 years later with Zuma as a "supplemental character" pushed into the system. Almost at once, the character was showing up in places that were not appropriate for a "supplemental character" (as the commitee knew it would). With the inventor trying to push his way into more prominent positions to promote his "baby".

Bad game plan and embarassing period of time for Aztec Athletics.

It's nice of the NCAA to gift you a sixth year senior. Don't fool yourself, we put the scare in you last year with our gimpy backup QB. ;)

Scared? You must've been watching the USM/UH game not the SMU/UH game. I can see where the the similar letters may confuse you.

The 6th year QB did kick your butt after coming back from a season ending injury during the 3rd game of 2010; HOWEVER, I also noticed something else pretty interesting.

After a cursory check on the interweb, it seems a true freshman QB who was forced into action in 2010, after QB's 1 & 2 were both injured for the season, ALSO lit up the little ponies 45-20 right in your own backyard. Were the Cougars scared then too?

John Jenkins, please pick up the white courtesy phone. Mr. John Jenkins please pick up the courtesy phone.
